Karen Thorne-Stone is the President and CEO of the Ontario Media Development Corporation, a crown agency responsible for stimulating investment and job creation in Ontario’s creative media industries including book and magazine publishing, music, film, television, and interactive digital media.
As head of OMDC, Thorne-Stone works to foster an advantageous business environment, facilitates innovation, supports cross-sector collaboration, enhances and leverages investment, and promotes Ontario as an international centre of excellence. OMDC delivers a wide range of programs and services including tax credits, investment funds, research initiatives, and international partnerships.
Previously Ms. Thorne-Stone worked with the City of Toronto, where she served in a variety of senior management positions, including Film Commissioner and Executive Director of Economic Development. In these roles, she directed the creation and advancement of labour force and strategic plans for key economic clusters, supported successful negotiations for a new state-of-the-art film studio complex on Toronto’s waterfront, and held leadership positions in several special projects including the SARS Economic Recovery Plan, Toronto’s Olympic Bid, and the amalgamation process that merged seven separate municipalities into one.
During her career, she has served as a Director on a several Boards including the Toronto Economic Development Corporation and is currently a member of Ryerson University’s Program Advisory Council.
